Guest Post from Debbie Fletcher - with some excellent advice for our students who are looking for help finding work.

Education and Employment Go Hand in Hand

Further education was never designed to be easy or straightforward and it can be a relatively long and time-consuming process that requires dedication and commitment. The benefits from full time study, regardless of the course you choose to do, can be incredible and shape and mould the rest of your life and not necessarily just from a career point of view. Many students choose to undertake courses that will change them as a person and provide better prospects and opportunities, which will benefit them throughout the rest of their lives.

For those wishing to attend school in order to improve their language skills, while at the same time supplementing their income there are many benefits such as:

  • Language skills – an area that can be greatly improved through the constant communication which occurs in every job
  • Social skills – socialising and being around all different types of people helps confidence to grow
  • Confidence – one of the most important personal attribute, being confident will enable you to grow as a person and with confidence comes self belief

There are certain jobs that fit in perfectly whilst providing all the benefits mentioned above… Bar staff, retail, waitressing, call centres are just a few jobs that are popular.

Students who are hoping to work while they are studying often find larger cities have more opportunities, and for this Portsmouth is ideal.
78% of the population of Portsmouth are in full time employment, a figure that is steadily rising since the recession, and a fact that is untrue for so many cities across the UK. Portsmouth is home to a multitude of large businesses and firms that are reasonable for the high level of employment. The businesses established in the area have an 88% survival rate, higher than any other in the UK. More and more students from across the globe are relocating to this city, even temporarily, to achieve the best education whilst having the ability to be employed whilst they study.
Competition is fierce for part time positions due to the high number of students from the University of Portsmouth, and the best way to stand out from the crowd is by having the perfect CV. The CV is the chance to sell yourself, your attributes and why you are the perfect person for the position. There are various sources of information to turn to when needing career based help such as advisors, recruitment specialists, such as Jobs Today, or your teachers.
